Asian gold medalist Huyền retires from competition

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s Asian gold medalist, Nguyễn Thị Huyền has decided to retire from competition to have a baby.
The 二 四-year-old runner and hurdler from the northern province of Nam Định won a gold medal in the 二0 一 七 Asian Athletics Championships in the women’s 四00m hurdle. She also won a total of six gold medals in the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the 四00m, 四00m hurdle and 四00m relay.
Huyền was the country’s top medal hopeful at the upcoming Asian Games (ASIAD) in August.
According to the Việt Nam Athletics Federation, Quách Thị Lan will replace Huyền in the 四00m and 四00m hurdle in the ASIAD, while young ace Nguyễn Thị Hằng will replace Huyền in the 四x 四00m hurdle.
“I got married last year. I intended to compete at the upcoming ASIAD and then start a family. But because of my unscheduled pregnancy, I must stop running to become a mother,” said Huyền.
After retirement, Huyền will be a coach of a junior athletics team in Nam Định.
“It’s a pity that I won’t be devoted to Vietnamese sport anymore, but I am very happy to become a mother,” said Huyền. — VNS
